Privacy
The short version: I run my own analytics to see how the site is used, and nobody else gets your data.
Who runs this site
joekane.org is my personal site, and I'm responsible for any personal data it collects. The quickest way to reach me about it is [email protected].
Analytics: Kestrel
Kestrel is a first-party analytics tool I build and run myself on Cloudflare. It's served from this domain, there are no third-party trackers or ad networks, and nothing it collects is sold or shared.
It records:
- the pages you view, where you came from, clicks, hovers, how far you scroll, and which form fields you use (never what you type in them);
- a replay of how the page was used, with every form field masked, so I can see where things are confusing;
- errors the site runs into, and how fast pages load;
- your IP address, approximate location and network (as reported by Cloudflare), and your device, browser and screen size.
To recognise a return visit, it sets one first-party cookie, _kid, which lasts up to 400 days and is only ever sent to this site.
How long it's kept:
- IP addresses in full for 30 days, then truncated so they no longer point to a single connection;
- replays for 30 days;
- everything else for up to 13 months.
If your browser sends Global Privacy Control or Do Not Track, you're only counted anonymously: no cookie, no replay, and your IP is truncated before it's stored.
Lawful basis
For the analytics, legitimate interests: understanding how the site is used so I can improve it and fix what breaks. For the contact form, the same: replying to you and keeping spam out.
The contact form
When you send a message through the contact page, your name, email, subject and message — plus your browser, IP address and rough location — are emailed to me via Resend, an email delivery service, so I can reply and cut spam. You get a copy of the acknowledgement. Your IP address may also be held for about an hour to rate-limit sending, and if a verification check is shown it's Cloudflare Turnstile. None of it is shared or sold.
Your rights
You can ask to see, correct or erase what I hold about you, or object to how it's used — email [email protected]. If you're unhappy with the answer, you can complain to the UK Information Commissioner's Office (ico.org.uk).
